I love the comments in Jon Evans'
On Managing Developers. The disagreements and arguing get to the heart of why it's often a crazy job. No two people expect the same manager as their optimal manager. I'm often in the position where I operate under "This is what makes sense right now" for a team. There are a few things that are common project to project, but most projects have a unique flavor and unique personalities that require flexibility, communication, and quick personal iterative cycles above other skills.
