Reading November 2021

Yeah, yeah.  Blah blah. I didn't update the last reading list.  I will...I've got lots of stuff read, I'm just slow to update.  11/28/2021, I'm closing this month down early.  I have some other things I'm part way into, but they can just make my December list.

August 2021 Reading List

Clearly not correct.  I'm going to put a pin in it and start over in November.  There were a lot of things I read part of over this three month weirdness, but had to keep setting down. Not sure what's getting in the way...exercise a bit?  Games...definitely games.  Lot of time playing on Steam.  Anyway, November 2021 is going to be very full of "real" books, so we'll pretend this quarter is sunk cost.

      • I liked this statement "For instance, during the coronavirus pandemic, many machine learning systems began to fail because they had been trained on statistical regularities instead of causal relations. As life patterns changed, the accuracy of the models dropped."
      • Why machine learning struggles with causality
      • Machine learning systems thrive on finding and exploiting statistical regularities. This is why they can’t do causal reasoning.
      • I also like "we don't need to drive a car off a cliff to know what will happen" - reminds me of Dwight and Michael following the GPS despite what their eyes told them was wrong.
      • ML and computers in general can interfere with your native capacity for counterfactuals is probably an amusing area of study.
